This page tracks upcoming deployments of software to the Wikimedia Foundation servers that host Wikimedia project sites (Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikiversity, Wikimedia Commons, etc.).
Schedule:

;Cadence
Most changes do not need new deploy windows. Instead, use the Backport windows which happen several times per day most days.
:For the core software ("MediaWiki"): The Wikimedia Foundation currently follows a one-week deploy cadence. This means that there is one week between updates to any one Wikimedia project site wiki (excluding urgent fixes, of course).
:For other non-core software: Each team is responsible for their own schedule.
;Scheduling
:You don't need to schedule a deploy window for most changes; they can be deployed using existing Backport windows that are already scheduled several times a week.
:To schedule a deploy window, or if you see a potential conflict with your upcoming deployment, please contact the Release Engineering Team on IRC at wikimedia-releng; pinging Greg (<code>greg-g</code>) or Tyler (<code>thcipriani</code>) directly helps.
;Inclusion criteria
:See the list at criteria for the kinds of changes that require scheduling a new deployment window.
;Long running tasks/scripts
:While not strictly a deployment, performing long running (>1 hour) tasks (eg: migration scripts) can encounter issues when code is updated while a script is being run. For this reason it is required to add an entry in the calendar for the task with a window that accounts for the anticipated start time and estimated length for the task.
;Communicating

*Every major or new feature deployment should be announced on the Wikimedia blog and/or Tech News (use the "user-notice" tag on Phabricator) and/or global on-wiki delivery. For routine and maintenance deployments, listing your change here is enough.
* Performing a long running task (over 1 hour) must have its own window. See also Inclusion criteria
*Changes that are liable to affect site performance or infrastructure should be announced on the ops mailing list. This includes anything that alters caching behavior, introduces cookies, substantially increases the static asset payload, or adds new and complicated query patterns.

;Something went wrong‽ (see also Incident response)
* When creating windows, schedule more time than you think you need, to account for issues that might slow you down. Generally, one hour is best for most things.
*Times are pinned to San Francisco, and thus the UTC time changes in March and November due to the DST.

*Is there a user-impacting or other severe issue?
To schedule a new recurring deploy window, or if you need help, contact Release Engineering on IRC at wikimedia-releng; and ping Greg (<code>greg-g</code>) or Tyler (<code>thcipriani</code>).
**Communicate this in the wikimedia-operations IRC channel.
**Add the #wikimedia-incident project to any relevant Phabricator task; if appropriate set to UBN! priority.
*What happens next?

Deployments

This page tracks upcoming deployments of software to the Wikimedia Foundation servers.

Cadence:

MediaWiki core follows a one-week deploy cadence (except for urgent fixes). For other services, teams decide their own schedule.

Schedule:

Most changes do not need new deploy windows. Instead, use the Backport windows which happen several times per day most days.

 • Performing a long running task (over 1 hour) must have its own window. See also Inclusion criteria
 • When creating windows, schedule more time than you think you need, to account for issues that might slow you down. Generally, one hour is best for most things.
 • Times are pinned to San Francisco, and thus the UTC time changes in March and November due to the DST.

To schedule a new recurring deploy window, or if you need help, contact Release Engineering on IRC at #wikimedia-releng connect; and ping Greg (greg-g) or Tyler (thcipriani).

Communicating:

Deployments of new or major features should first be announced on the Wikimedia blog, Tech News, and/or global MassMessage to relevant communities.

Changes that are likely to affect cache behaviour, add new cookies, or utilize new database tables, should be announced on the ops mailing list first.

Something went wrong? See Incident response. Is there a user-impacting problem? Communicate in the #wikimedia-operations connect IRC channel. If there is a Phabricator task, ensure #Wikimedia-Incident is tagged, and consider setting the Unbreak Now priority.
